SOUTHLAKE, Texas – St. Gregory's swimmers Austin Cody and Garrett Thompson produced their school's first-ever "A" national qualifying standards, and the Cavaliers finished seventh at the SCAC Western Shootout this weekend.
Cody, a sophomore from Norman, made the "A" cut in the 100-yard breastroke. He finished in 1:00.51, which was about a half-second better than the standard. Cody placed fourth in the event and scored 30 points to lead all Cavaliers for the weekend.
Thompson, a freshman from Altus, posted a time of 21.96 in the 50-yard freestyle – 0.13 faster than the "A" mark. He hit the "B" standard earlier this season. Cody placed sixth among 50 free competitors.
Sophomore Jason Schroeder also shined this weekend, posting a pair of "B" national standards. He finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.33 – just four one-hundredths of a second shy of the "A" cut. He turned in 49.33 in the 100-yard freestyle, which was good for eighth overall. Schroeder scored 26 points for the weekend.
"We have accomplished a lot as a team already, but I think this weekend tops them all," Schroeder said. "We had so many individual improvements in addition to the national cuts. And we are doing this as a first-year program with a small team. I don't think there's any doubt that we have the potential to do amazing things in the coming months and years."
St. Gregory's doesn't resume competition until January 9 at Austin College.
