SHAWNEE – Another St. Gregory's athlete will be making the trip to the NAIA national meet later this month. Cavalier freshman Quintin Powell punched his ticket with a provisional qualifying time in the 400 Friday at the OBU Last Chance meet.

Here are some highlights from the event:

  • Powell's qualifying time was 48.44 – just six one-hundredths of a second inside the "B" standard. He finished third in the event.
  • Jerica Heyd was .08 meters off a "B" standard in the long jump. Her season-best distance of 5.41 was good for fourth overall.
  • Sara Cusick placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 45.86 meters – a season-best mark.
  • Sabrina DeSantiago notched a season-best time of 2:21.54 in the 800. She finished eighth in that event.
  • Hosea Maritim finished second in the 800 with a time of 1:56.68.

The NAIA national meet is May 21-23 in Gulf Shores, Ala. Powell, along with Anthony Watkins (110 hurdles), Heyd (triple jump) and Alexis Gee (half marathon) have qualified for the event.
