CRETE, Neb. – Robert Torres turned in the NAIA's third-best time this season in the 1,000-meter run, highlighting the action Saturday for St. Gregory's at the Fred Beile Classic. The event was hosted by Doane College.
Torres, a junior from Salinas, Calif., won the event in 2:31.03 – more than three seconds clear of the nearest competitor. The personal-best time automatically qualifies Torres for nationals.
Several other top finishes and personal records were had by the Cavs Saturday. Here are some of the highlights:
- Holly Anderson's 29.67 in the 200 and 10.26 in the 60 hurdles were both season bests.
- Sabrina DeSantiago (1:43.83, 6th), Sophia Weisbruch (1:45.98, 12th), Heather Anderson (1:54.79, 18th) and Adrianna Garza (2:02.55, 21st) all hit personal bests in the 600.
- Sara Cuzick finished with a distance of 13.40m in the weight throw – a personal record.
- Quintin Powell's time of 7.25 in the 60 was a personal best. He earned a fifth-place finish in the 400 with a time of 52.10.
- Ben Dodson tied his PR in the 600 after coming in at 1:26.65 (ninth overall).
- Mohamed Bassime finished sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:02.08 – a personal record.
- Both Jose Fonseca (9:25.32, 4th) and Dustin Baxter (9:50.08, 12th) PR'd in the 3K. Fonseca finished sixth overall in the mile with a season-best time of 4:41.74.
- Blake Crouch posted a 10th-place finish in the 5K (17:09.13), and Luis Lopez finished with a personal-best 17:34.27.
- Anthony Watkins was fifth out of 26 competitors in the 60 hurdles. His time of 8.51 was only .09 off a national provisional standard.
- Both Edgar Villarreal (13.39m) and Jerrit Moore (11.86m) set personal records in the weight throw.
St. Gregory's heads for the Gorilla Classic next weekend. The two-day event is hosted by Pittsburg State University.
