JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – St. Gregory's junior Robert Torres narrowly missed the finals Friday at the 2016 NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field National Championships. The event was held at the David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field.
Torres, a native of Salinas, Calif., finished the 1,000-meter preliminary round with a time of 2:31.37 – eighth-best among his competitors but 10th overall due to qualifying procedures. He started the race strong and was in second place in his heat with just 100 meters remaining but was unable to hold on to that pace.
Torres' time was just .34 off his personal best, an automatic qualifying standard set earlier this season at the Fred Beile Classic. Torres, who qualified for cross country nationals this past season, made his first appearance at the championship event as an individual in track.
