DALLAS – Three Cavaliers posted hat tricks, and St. Gregory's picked up a big 13-5 divisional win over the University of Texas-Dallas Friday night on the road. The Cavs improved to 5-1 overall and now stand atop the LSA D2 North alone at 3-0.
SGU turned up its defensive effort against the Comets, who came into the contest 4-0 with an average of 16 goals per game. UTD managed only two scores in the first half, though, as the Cavs built a five-goal lead at intermission. Five different SGU players scored in the opening 30 minutes, led by two goals from Matthew Hyde and Anthony Robinson.
James Smith converted two unassisted goals to start the third quarter, and Hyde made it 10-2 with his third goal of the game at the 4:03 mark. UTD cut it to 11-5 early in the fourth, but Robinson's score from Richard Fromdahl followed by Smith's conversion from Chandler Peterson put it away.
Smith finished with a game-high four goals and two assists. It was his 16th hat trick in his last 17 games. Robinson had three goals and a helper – his second-career hat trick. Hyde posted his second three-score game in his last three contests.
SGU enjoyed a 40-16 advantage in total shots and a 47-20 edge in ground balls. Chris Lester tallied a team-best seven ground balls. Sean McCollough and Hyde each had five. Tanner Reese turned away eight shots in goal.
St. Gregory's will try to pick up its second LSA North win in as many days Sunday at Tarleton State. Opening faceoff is scheduled for noon in Stephenville, Texas.
