SHAWNEE – St. Gregory's had nine players find the scoring column in a 20-3 rout of Dallas Baptist Friday at a soggy Fr. Victor Roberts Field. The Cavaliers won their sixth straight game, improving to 5-0 in Lone Star Alliance D2 North play.
James Smith continued his offensive tear with a game-best six goals. It was his sixth consecutive hat trick and 18th in his last 19 contests. Chandler Peterson also notched a hat trick – his second straight and fourth of the season.
Four other Cavs – Anthony Robinson, Richard Fromdahl, Jake Henderson and Chris Lester – had two goals each. Sean McCollough and Fromdahl tied for game-high honors with three assists each.
St. Gregory's controlled the possession from the outset, limiting the Patriots to only 14 shots for the game. The Cavs led 5-1 after a first quarter that saw Fromdahl score twice. The hosts had doubled their advantage (10-2) by intermission.
Smith took over in the third, scoring four times in the frame as SGU put it away with a 6-0 quarter. Four different Cavs converted goals in the fourth period for the final margin.
St. Gregory's had a 60-44 edge in ground balls, led by a game-high nine from Matthew Hyde. Hyde also was 15-for-16 in faceoffs. SGU keeper Tanner Reese turned away five of the Patriots' eight on-target attempts.
The Cavaliers, now 7-1 overall, face a tough two-game road trip next week in Colorado. SGU plays Johnson & Wales Monday before taking on MCLA D2 No. 20 Metro State Tuesday.
