DENVER – James Smith had another big game, and St. Gregory's ran away with a 19-6 win over Johnson & Wales (Colo.) Monday evening. The Cavaliers won their seventh consecutive contest, upping their overall record to 8-1.
SGU flipped the script from a year ago when the Wildcats downed the Cavs, 16-4, in Shawnee. It was a different story this time around as the visitors outscored JWU, 15-2, over the final three quarters.
Smith, who was named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Offensive Player of the Week earlier Monday, turned in an eight-goal, two-assist game. He also tallied four ground balls. It was Smith's seventh straight hat trick and the fourth time in six games he's netted at least six goals.
Down 2-0 early, SGU scored four of the first quarter's final six goals to even the score at the end of the period. The Cavs got goals from four different players in the second – Richard Fromdahl, Chandler Peterson, Anthony Robinson and Sean McCollough – and it was 8-4 at intermission.
McCollough, Smith and Fromdahl combined to score the first three goals of the third quarter to make it an 11-4 advantage. After JWU pulled to within 11-6 late in the frame, SGU responded by recording the game's final eight scores. Smith accounted for four of those.
Robinson finished with four goals on seven shots and totaled five ground balls. It was his second hat trick of the season. Peterson also had a hat trick, his fourth in five games. McCollough tallied two scores and a game-high five assists.
Matthew Hyde had a game-best 10 ground balls. He was 19 of 22 in faceoffs. In goal, Tanner Reese turned away 18 of the Wildcats' 24 on-target attempts.
SGU enjoyed a 91-29 advantage in ground balls and a 39-27 edge in total shots.
St. Gregory's concludes its Colorado road trip Tuesday against MCLA No. 20 Metro State. Opening faceoff is set for 10 p.m. (CST).
