SHAWNEE – St. Gregory's wrapped up the top spot in the Lone Star Alliance Division II North division Sunday with a 20-2 rout of Stephen F. Austin at Fr. Victor Roberts Field. The Cavaliers completed an unblemished regular season at home (6-0) to go along with a perfect 7-0 mark in division play.
SGU, 14-4 overall, now looks toward postseason play where it will be the No. 2 seed in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. That event is scheduled for April 22-23 in Leavenworth, Kan.
The Lumberjacks (4-4, 4-3 LSA D2 North) scored the first and last goals of the contest. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Cavs accounted for the 20 scores in between. The hosts led 5-1 after one quarter, 11-1 at halftime and 16-1 after three quarters.
Matthew Hyde led the way offensively with four goals and two assists. He was one of four SGU players to record a hat trick. James Smith had three scores and two assists, Chandler Peterson totaled three goals and one helper, while Sean McCollough had three scores.
Brandon Brackett, Jake Henderson and Anthony Robinson scored twice each.
SGU had a 56-13 advantage in total shots and a 62-28 edge in ground balls. Hyde led all players with nine ground balls, while teammate Keyton Marzolf finished with eight. Hyde was 10-for-14 in face-off opportunities.
The Cavs limited SFA to only seven on-target attempts. Tanner Reese and Joseph Brasher combined to turn away five of those.
