FT. WORTH, Texas – St. Gregory's men's golf team posted its best-ever finish at the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament this week, coming in fourth overall at the 7,085-yard layout of Waterchase Golf Club in Ft. Worth.
The Cavaliers turned in a three-round total of 882. That trailed third-place Texas Wesleyan by 21 strokes and runner-up Wayland Baptist by 23 shots. Oklahoma City won the tournament with a combined total of 830. All three teams that finished in front of SGU are ranked among the top seven in the NAIA.
The fourth-place finish capped perhaps the best season in program history for the men's team, which finished among the top five in eight of nine tournaments between the fall and spring campaigns.
Leading the way individually for the Cavs was Brett Kennedy. His 72-69-73 placed fifth among 58 participants and landed him on the all-tournament team. Kennedy had four birdies and a bogey to go along with 13 pars in SGU's best round of the tournament – his 3-under-par 69 on Monday.
Morgen Pettigrew tied for 18th with a 75-72-75, and John Horvath finished tied for 25th with a 76-74-76. Bobby Stone's three-round 227 tied for 28th, and Danny De Los Santos carded a 228 to finish tied for 31st. Rounding out the Cavs' scores was Cody Gannon's 232 – good for 38th overall.
SGU's women's team placed seventh overall with a two-round total of 744. Oklahoma City won that event as well with a combined 604.
Freshman Rylie Eller, who has come on strong this spring for the Cavs, led her team with an 85-87. She had an eagle, birdie and 14 pars between her two rounds. That was good for 25th overall.
Alexis Tallant was 30th after firing a 95-87. Rounding out SGU's scores were Taylor Greteman (185, 32nd) and Baylie Keith (205, 38th).
