Men's Track & Field - Fri, May 6, 2016

LUBBOCK, Texas – Two more St. Gregory's athletes punched their tickets to nationals Friday at the Masked Rider Open, hosted by Texas Tech University at the Fuller Track & Field Complex.

Quintin Powell, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, turned in a personal-record 48.05 in the 400 – a quarter of a second inside the automatic national qualifying standard. Powell placed seventh in the event. He also bettered his own school record in the 200, posting a time of 21.76 to finish 12th overall.

Joining Powell at nationals will be Anthony Watkins. The senior from Kileen, Texas, broke a school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.68 – also an automatic qualifying standard. Watkins placed sixth among his competitors.

Robert Torres and Ben Dodson came up just short of a standard as did the SGU 4x100 relay team.

Torres' school-record time of 3:58.54 was about two seconds off the standard in the 1500. That was good for second overall. Dodson knocked over a second off his PR in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.28, which was just off a "B" standard.

The relay team of Tyler Farris, Demetrius Jones, Watkins and Powell set a school record with a time of 42.10 – just .11 off qualifying.

Other highlights from the day include:

  • Taylor McKenzie broke his own school record in the javelin with a toss of 44.64 meters. He finished fourth.
  • Sabrina DeSantiago placed fifth in the 1500 after coming in at 4:58.95 and fourth in the 5K with a time of 19:42.19.
