SHAWNEE – A pair of St. Gregory's golfers posted top 10 finishes this week at the second-annual SGU Cavalier Classic. The two-day tournament was hosted at the 6,851-yard layout of Shawnee Country Club.

Morgen Pettigrew, a junior from Shawnee, led the hosts with a 72-74 – good for a fifth-place tie in the 40-golfer field. He had 16 pars in Monday's 1-over-par opening round – the best score of any SGU player for the tournament.

Braden Ricks, a freshman from Shawnee, came in tied for ninth with a 74-73. He turned in six birdies between the two rounds.

SGU finished fourth as a team with a combined score of 602. That trailed tourney champion Bellevue (Neb.) by 18 strokes. Oklahoma Wesleyan placed second (585), and the University of Texas-Dallas came in third (592). Bellevue's Diego Gudino earned top medalist honors with a 1-over-par 142.

Five other Cavaliers competed in the event. Matias Nelson fired a 74-78 to place tied for 13th. He was followed by Andrew Joiner's 79-76, which was good for a 19th-place tie. Reese Leiker was just outside the top 20 with a 77-79.

Rounding out the scores for SGU were Rickey Hong (158, 26th) and Bryan Hubble (202, 37th).

St. Gregory's resumes play next week at The Mid-South. That event will be hosted at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kan.
