PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist completed a regular-season sweep of St. Gregory's with a straight-sets victory (25-21, 25-14, 25-20) Friday night at the Hutcherson Center. The Pioneers, who downed the Cavaliers 3-0 in Shawnee last month, won for the third time in their last four matches.
SGU (19-12, 10-5 SAC) hit only .014 as a team. Gabby Ware led the Cavs with eight kills. Ashlyn Broussard totaled a team-best 22 digs, while Sarah Ahrens finished with 12 assists. Broussard, Courtney Murphy and Kayrin Wells tied for team-high honors with three blocks apiece.
Katie Inman led the Pioneers – who hit at a .125 clip – with a 10-kill, 12-dig double-double. Rossanna Ramos tallied a match-best 23 digs, and Elisabeth Piroli had 25 assists for WBU – now at 21-13 overall and 14-2 in SAC play.
Down 19-11 in the first, SGU battled back with five consecutive points to make it 19-16. The Cavs would later pull to within 23-21 on a WBU attack error, but the home team closed the frame with two straight kills.
An early run propelled the Pioneers in the second. Tied at three, the hosts scored eight of the set's next 10 points to create some separation. SGU got no closer than three the rest of the way.
The final game was back and forth until late. Up 20-19, WBU put it away with a 5-1 run. Inman ended it with a kill from Riyana Rakrouki.
St. Gregory's concludes its road trip Saturday at Texas Wesleyan. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Ft. Worth.
