The St. Gregory's University women's soccer team broke a three-game losing streak Wednesday by battling Southwestern Christian (Okla.) University to a 1-1 draw at Father Victor Roberts Field. The Cavaliers, who had been outscored 10-0 to start the season, got off the snide with senior Criscela Hernandez's second-half equalizer.
"It's a start, and it's nice to stay out of the loss column, but we would have liked the win," said SGU's first-year coach Tommy Riley. "It is frustrating that we dominated the game when it comes to possession, but we failed to score goals."
Southwestern Christian got on the board with a Miranda White goal in the 40th minute. Hernandez answered in the 60th minute off an assist from Chloe Murphy and Jennifer Alesch to tie the score. The teams remained in a deadlock through two overtime periods.
SGU (0-3-1) outshot the visitors 16-11, including five shots on goal. Alesch, a senior from Mustang, led the Cavaliers with five shots, while Murphy had four. Senior goalie Jennifer Taber recorded five saves.
SGU returns to action September 11 at Bethel College. That game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
