The St. Gregory's University men's cross country team opened the season on a solid note Saturday, placing three runners in the top 35 at the UCO Land Run. Cavalier freshman Dominic Cabada, running unattached, placed sixth overall. SGU finished fifth as a team.
Cabada, from Boulder, Colo., came in with a time of 20:40.98 on the 6,000-meter course. He was followed by placeholders Dontayveous Allen (21:44.29 - 24th), Hosea Maritim (21:56.42 - 31st), Gustavo Escobar (22:11.83 - 34th), Grayson Ceballos (22:28.96 - 38th) and Jaime Morin (28:46.84 - 57th).
"We ran well today," said first-year SGU coach Matt Aguero. "Hosea had some shoe issues that hindered his race, but overall, I was very happy with our performance."
Saturday's meet was the first for the Cavaliers since the 2008 season when cross country was discontinued by the university. SGU returns to action September 29 when they travel to Stillwater for the OSU Cowboy Jamboree.
