SHAWNEE- On Thursday afternoon the Cavaliers men and women's track and field teams competed at the OBU Early Outdoor Invitational on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University. The Cavs men and women set many new school records and crushed even more personal records.
On the men's side Demetrius Jones (JR/Edmond, Okla.) (JR/Edmond, Okla.) set new personal records in the 100 meter dash, 110 meter hurdles, and in the 200 meter dash. Austin Stone (SR/Moore, Okla.) (SR/Moore, Okla.) finished in fifth place in the shot put, and he finished sixth in discus. Robert Torres (SR/Salinas, Calif.) (SR/Salinas, Calif.) turned in impressive performance in the men's 1500 meter run, and finished in sixth place. Josh Garcia (FR/Pharr, Texas) (FR/Pharr, Texas) set new personal records in the men's 100 meter dash and in the 200 meter dash. McCrae Lopez (SO/Buna, Texas) (SO/Buna, Texas) set new personal records in the 100 and 200 meter dashes as well. Colton Edlen set a new personal best time in the 200 meter dash. Taylor McKenzie (SO/Keller, Texas) (SO/Keller, Texas) had a very productive day by finishing second in javelin, and setting a new personal record in the 200 meter dash. McKenzie's performance was especially impressive in the javelin throw, because he nearly broke his own school record while throwing into a strong head wind. Oscar Garza (SR/Harlingen, Texas) (SR/Harlingen, Texas) and Brandon Bradford (FR/McAllen, Texas) (FR/McAllen, Texas) each set new personal records in the 100 meter dash.
On the women's side, Jasmine Mason (FR/Del City, Okla.) (FR/Del City, Okla.) set a new school record in the women's 100 meter dash, with a time of 12.23. Jasmine Exum (FR/Edmond, Okla.) (FR/Edmond, Okla.) set a new personal best distance in the long jump, and she finished in eighth place overall. Megan Cervantes (FR/Brownsville, Texas) (FR/Brownsville, Texas) set a new personal record in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 1:03.45, and finished in fifth place. Tayler Woodard (FR/Broken Arrow, Okla.) (FR/Broken Arrow, Okla.) finished in ninth place in the women's 200 meter dash, and set a new personal record in the event. She also finished in eighth in the 100 meter dash with another personal best time. Alexas Vargas (FR/Terrell, Texas) (FR/Terrell, Texas) set a new personal best in the women's 10,000 meter run, and Holly Anderson (JR/Alex, Okla.) (JR/Alex, Okla.) set a new personal best, and a new school record in the javelin throw. The women's 4x400 meter team of Sophia Weisbruch (SO/Temple, Texas) (SO/Temple, Texas), Teresa Ambuul (FR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) (FR/Colorado Springs, Colo.), Sabrina DeSantiago (JR/Lubbock, Texas) (JR/Lubbock, Texas), and Megan Cervantes finished in third place with a time of 4:10.28. Domonique Criddle finished third in discus, only four meters from qualifying for nationals.
The Cavs track and field teams will be back in action on March 25 when they compete at the Oklahoma Baptist Open, right here in Shawnee, Okla.
