The St. Gregory's University men's soccer team held serve for more than 55 minutes with No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday at Father Victor Roberts Field. The Cavaliers, however, were outshot 12-2 in the second half en route to a 3-0 loss to the Eagles. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for SGU.
OWU's Lucas Cordeiro scored the first of his two goals 11 minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie. Just five minutes later, the Eagles increased their advantage to two goals when Felipe Guedes found Ivan Ristic, whose header narrowly escaped the reach of SGU goalkeeper Brock Vorwald.
"We played pretty well for more than a half today," said SGU coach Andrew Rundell. "We just didn't capitalize on our opportunities. You have to be able to capitalize on those to compete with a top 15 team."
SGU (4-4) had only seven shots, including four on goal, for the game. Freshmen Mark McGrath and Arturo Flores led the attack with two shots each. Vorwald, the Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had seven saves.
The Cavaliers return to action Thursday at No. 5-ranked USAO. That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
