The St. Gregory's Men's Golf Team wrapped up their 2016-2017 campaign this week at the Sooner Athletic Conference Golf Championship. The two-day 54 hole tournament was played at the Par 72, 7,035 yard layout of Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City.
The Cavaliers sat in fourth after the first round, but high winds saw their second round score move them into sixth. The men weren't able to make a move in the third round and finished the event in sixth.
Morgen Pettigrew (JR/Shawnee, Okla.) was the best finisher for the Cavs placing 12th and finishing higher than the 29th and 35th ranked players in the nation according to GolfStat. Pettigrew fired rounds of 77, 79, 75 in the tough conditions and was the only player for SGU to have three scores in the 70s. Matias Nelson (FR/Mustang, Okla.) shot a final round 76, two strokes better than the third round average, to finish in 17th for the event. The scoring for the Cavs was rounded out by Braden Ricks (FR/Shawnee, Okla.), Rickey Hong (SO/Choctaw, Okla.), and Bryan Hubble (FR/Tuttle, Okla.).
Head Coach Rob Bennett had this to say about the season for the Cavaliers, "I am very proud of how our guys fought all year long. We had some lofty goals going into the summer last year and saw those goals change due to a lot of different circumstances. Our guys always kept pressing forward even after taking a few more blows throughout the season. They battled together and I think we will be better for it next year. We learned a lot about ourselves as individuals and as a team. I know each one of these guys will be working hard over the summer to continue to improve and we will be back even stronger next year."
