FORT WORTH, Texas- St. Gregory's softball faced off with Texas Wesleyan for a double-header on Friday afternoon in Fort Worth, and the Rams took both games from the Cavs. The Rams won 4-3 in game one, and then they took game two 6-4. The two wins for the Rams now bring them to within one game of SGU in the SAC standings. The Cavs currently sit in third place, and the Rams are in fourth with one series to go for each team.
In game one, Texas Wesleyan struck first, with three runs in the the bottom of the second inning. The Cavaliers scored one run the the top of the fourth inning, to come within two runs. In the sixth inning, the Cavaliers rallied for two more runs to tie the game at three, but the Rams would score one run in the bottom of the seventh, to take the walk-off win.
Bryn Houlton (JR/Savanna, Okla.) went all 6 1/3 innings for SGU in the circle, allowing three earned runs in the loss.
Sammy Leisinger (SR/Little Axe, Okla.) and Lauren Miller (JR/Blanchard, Okla.) each went 2-4 to lead the Cavs at the plate. Miller also collected one RBI in the contest. Crystal Pablo (SO/Gallup, N.M.) went 1-3 with a homerun, while Jessica Nelson (JR/Lewisville, Texas), Ashli Hafford (JR/Blanchard, Okla.), and Bryanne Knox (SR/Dickson, Okla.) each added one hit a piece.
The Cavaliers got on the scoreboard first in game two, by bringing three runs across home plate in the top of the third inning. The Cavs increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth, but the Rams rallied for 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning to take teh lead. Texas Wesleyan added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, before closing out the Cavs for the double-header sweep.
Chula Chavez (JR/Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was handed her sixth loss of the season, as she went 4 1/3 innings. Kasady Uhr (SO/Yukon, Okla.) took over for the final 1 2/3 innings of the game for SGU.
Sutv Meely (SR/Tecumseh, Okla.) had a big game at the plate by going 3-5 with a double and a run scored. Bryanne Knox went 2-3 with a run scored, and Baylee Hughes (FR/Brighton, Ill.) also went 2-3 at the plate. Crystal Pablo went 1-4 with a two run homer, giving her four homeruns on the season now. Jessica Nelson, Sammy Leisinger, and Lauren Miller each added one hit a piece for SGU.
St. Gregory's is scheduled to back in action tomorrow against SAGU in Waxahachie, Texas, but storms may move that game to a different time. This will be the Cavs final series before they compete in the conference tournament, which they'll host at the Ballfields at Firelake on May 4 and 5.
