Mid-America Christian University scored early and hung on late in a 1-0 win over St. Gregory's University Friday at Fr. Victor Roberts Field. The Evangels struck with just under four minutes remaining in the first half and made it hold up in posting their first conference victory of the season.

SGU (4-8, 0-4 SAC) lost for the fifth consecutive time and third straight game when outshooting its opponent. The Cavaliers held an 11-7 advantage on shots for the game, including 6-3 in the second half.

"We're just not playing well right now," said SGU coach Andrew Rundell. "We're not scoring goals, and we're not defending as a unit. We are behind the eight ball now and need a win pretty bad."

MACU (7-4-1, 1-2-1 SAC) scored the game's lone goal in the 42nd minute when Andy Mendoza found teammate Willy Deleon who headed the ball past SGU keeper Brock Vorwald. Despite playing a good portion of the game's final minutes on the offensive end, the Cavaliers couldn't come up with the equalizer.

SGU's Mark McGrath had a game-high four shots. Vorwald finished with three saves.

The Cavaliers return to action Wednesday at John Brown University. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
