SHAWNEE - St. Gregory's University junior Alex Burton stole the spotlight on Senior Day at Father Victor Roberts Field Tuesday, scoring the game-winner with three seconds left in overtime to lift the Cavaliers to a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma City University. The win was the first in conference play for SGU this season, snapping a seven-game losing streak overall.

Cavalier senior Joel Petillon started the late-game dramatics when he saved the ball from going out of bounds and played it forward to Burton with seven seconds remaining. Burton, a Del City native, took the pass and bent it in the far side of the goal before running across the field and sliding to his knees in front of the SGU crowd.

"I heard the countdown start and I knew I needed to do something quickly," said Burton, who scored the first game-winner of his SGU career. "(Joel) made a great save and touched it ahead perfectly to me. I can't believe it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me."

The Cavaliers took a 1-0 advantage in the 31st minute when Jason Swift scored from the left side. That lead held until the 82nd minute when OCU's Daniel Yeom dribbled through defenders and beat SGU keeper Brock Vorwald for the equalizer.

SGU (5-10, 1-6 SAC) outshot the Stars 12-11. Mark McGrath and Stephen Cummins led the Cavalier attack with three shots each. Vorwald finished with a game-high five saves.

Before the game, St. Gregory's recognized seven seniors who played their final home game: Petillon, Hugo Mondragon, Sid Shankar, Edwin Carbajal, Luke Keogh, Ricardo Almeida and Thomas McNamara.

"It's brilliant. You couldn't write that ending any better," Keogh said. "I was thinking that we were headed to a second overtime. It was a lovely touch and a lovely finish."

The Cavaliers conclude their season Friday at Rogers State University. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
