Friday morning the Cavalier volleyball team opened up play in the SAC conference volleyball tournament. The 6th seeded Cavs played the 3rd seeded Pioneers of Wayland Baptist. This was the third meeting between the two teams this season and the second time in the past eight days. The two previous meetings ended the same way Friday's match ended, with the Pioneers coming out on top 3-0.
During the first set the Cavaliers fell behind quickly 9-3, however they settled down and went on a 10-6 run to pull within two points at 15-13. The Cavs kept battling but were never able to gain control of the set and lost by the final score of 25-18.
It looked as if the Cavs were going to take their first set from the Pioneers during the second set as the Cavs jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. Errors by the Cavaliers allowed the Pioneers back in the set and the Cavs were only able to score eight more points, dropping the set 25-15.
The third and final set was a hard fought one between both teams. Neither squad was able to gain control of the set and the 25-21 final score, held by the Pioneers, was the largest lead by either team.
The loss ended a successful season for the Cavaliers and first-year coach Katrina English. The 12 wins on the season was almost double the amount of wins by any previous Cavalier volleyball team. After the match, coach English was proud of her team's hard work all season and feels that with the type of players returning, that the future looks bright for the Cavaliers.
