SHAWNEE – Dale High School product Jared Coon had a big day in USAO's doubleheader sweep of St. Gregory's Saturday at Bill Nicklas Field. The senior outfielder went 6-for-9 as the Drovers took the opener, 5-2, before winning the nightcap, 6-5. The Cavaliers have dropped six of their last seven games.
Coon, a four-time state champion and All-State selection at Dale, was 4-for-4 in the opener with a home run and a double as the Drovers overcame an early deficit to win. Down 1-0, USAO plated three runs on three hits in the third and then held on late.
SGU cut it to 3-2 on a Davis Murphy RBI single in the fourth, but Coon answered with his fifth home run of the season in the fifth to make it 4-2. The Cavs managed only one base runner in the final three innings.
Chris Sutton (0-6) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in 5-2/3 innings.
SGU took an early lead again in Game 2. The home team got an RBI ground out from Mark Milioto in the first and then scored two in the third on an error and a Christian Torres RBI double.
USAO cut it to 3-2 in the fourth with a two-run inning, capped off by a Coon RBI single. The visitors followed that up with four runs on five hits in the fifth and never relinquished the lead.
Cody Guenthart's second home run of the season in the sixth inning reduced the deficit to 6-5, but SGU didn't get a runner to second base the rest of the way.
Mike Pople (2-2) was the Cavs' pitcher of record. He gave up five runs on six hits in 4-1/3 innings pitched. Jacob Ratliff extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a 1-for-2 game. He went 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of runs scored.
The Cavs return to action Tuesday at No. 24-ranked Bacone College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
