OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 7-ranked Oklahoma City found its offensive stride Friday, scoring 22 runs on 29 hits in completing a four-game, regular-season sweep of No. 12 St. Gregory's at Ann Lacy Stadium. After taking two from the Cavaliers in Shawnee Tuesday, the Stars won 8-5 and 14-6 on their home field.
SGU dropped to 30-11 overall and 11-9 inside Sooner Athletic Conference play. All nine of the Cavs' conference losses this season have come to teams inside the NAIA's top 10.
After SGU scored two runs on an OCU error in the second inning in the opener, the Stars redeemed themselves in the third by scoring six runs on six hits. The big hit came via a grand slam off the bat of Drew Wright, who at the time, collected her eighth RBI against the Cavs in three consecutive at-bats.
Trailing 8-2 and down to its final out, SGU got a three-run home run from junior Caitlin O'Hagan – her second of the season – to pull to within three. But OCU's Jamie Rateliff struck out Tara Nall a batter later to end the threat.
Sierra Gallego (10-5) suffered her third consecutive loss – all against the Stars. She gave up six earned runs on 11 hits and struck out two. Melanie Gladden was the only Cavalier with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair early with each team scoring one run in the first and two runs in the second inning. SGU took a 4-3 lead in the third on Whitney Anderson's team-leading ninth home run of the season, but OCU responded with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame.
The Cavs cut it to 7-6 after putting up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a Danielle Bacon RBI single and Callie Pacheco's run-scoring ground out. But the home team responded again, this time effectively putting the game away with a five-run, five-hit inning. The frame was capped by Magean De La Torre's two-run home run to center.
OCU tacked on two more runs in the sixth to invoke the run rule. Rateliff retired the final five Cavaliers she faced to pick up her third win of the series.
Allison Conyers (4-3) had one of her worst outings of the season in the circle. She gave up nine runs on 13 hits in four innings pitched. Gladden had another two-hit game – this time going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jordan Walters also finished 2-for-3.
SGU takes a break from conference play Monday when it hosts Northwood University. That doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the SGU Softball Complex.
