Five St. Gregory's athletes descend on Gulf Shores, Ala., this week for the 2016 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The three-day event will be hosted at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
SGU's Quintin Powell, Anthony Watkins, Blake Crouch, Alexis Gee and Sabrina DeSantiago all hit national standards in their respective events to qualify for the meet.
Powell, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, will be competing in both the 200- and 400-meter dash.
He enters with the 13th-best time among his competitors in the 200 after finishing with an automatic qualifying time and school-record 21.36 at the MSSU Last Chance Twilight meet. Powell is scheduled to compete in the trials at 5:05 p.m. Thursday. If he advances, Saturday's finals are slated for 5:20 p.m.
Powell's 48.16 in the 400 – also an "A" standard – ranks 12th overall. He achieved that time at the Masked Rider Open where he placed seventh. Powell's 400 trial begins Friday at 3:50 p.m., while the finals are slated for 4:40 p.m. Saturday.
Watkins, a senior from Kileen, Texas, broke a school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.68 – also an automatic qualifying standard – at the Masked Rider Open. His time is 14th among his competitors. Watkins competes at 1:45 p.m. Friday. Saturday's finals are set for 3:30 p.m.
Crouch, Gee and DeSantiago all qualified in the marathon.
Crouch, a sophomore from Edmond, punched his ticket to nationals at the Moundbuilder Half Marathon. His "B" standard 1:14.50 enters as the 53rd-best time at nationals. Gee, a junior from Moore, qualified at the same event with an automatic qualifying time of 1:29.42 – 19th among her competitors.
DeSantiago, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, booked her trip to nationals with an automatic qualifying time of 1:29:51 at the Prairie Fire Spring Half Marathon. That time ranks 21st among those competing at nationals. The marathon is scheduled for 6 a.m. Saturday.
