To say St. Gregory's University coach Matt Aguero has a young team would be an understatement. Track and field has returned to SGU after a nearly five-year hiatus, and the first-year coach will look to several youngsters to begin the program's revitalization. Twenty of the 23 athletes on the men's roster are freshmen.
The team heads to Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday to kick off its indoor season at the Texas Tech Invitational. It will be SGU's first track and field meet since 2008, when the school discontinued the sport.
"There will probably be some nerves Saturday," said Aguero, who was hired last year to lead both the cross country and track and field teams. "It will be a chance for us to see exactly where each athlete is at."
There are three freshmen, Aguero said, who may make an immediate impact out of the gate: Christian Hammers, Dontayveous Allen and Dominic Cabada.
Hammers, a sprinter from Germany, was a three-time finalist in the 200- and 400-meter events in high school. He also was part of a 4x400 relay team that won a championship.
Allen is expected to excel in mid-distance events. A Longview, Texas, native, Allen also competed for SGU's cross country team this fall.
Allen's teammate on the cross country team, Cabada, hopes to pick up where he left off in the distance events. He finished in the top third at the cross country national meet in November.
"Most of them are seeing their first indoor season, but I expect them to perform well," Aguero said.
The team has five indoor events scheduled before the national meet on February 28 in Geneva, Ohio.
