PLAINVIEW, Texas – St. Gregory's dropped a pair of one-run decisions, 5-4 and 2-1, to Wayland Baptist Saturday at Wilder Field. The Cavaliers came up empty despite out-hitting the Pioneers 15-13 on the day. WBU has won four of its last six games.
SGU's Jacob Ratliff extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 4-for-7 day at the plate. Matt Blackwell had three hits after going 4-for-7 on Friday. But the Cavs had trouble hitting with runners in scoring position for most of the day, leaving 15 on the base paths between the two games.
SGU trailed 2-0 in Game 1 before rallying for a run in the second and third innings to tie it. Davis Murphy and Ratliff each had RBI hits in those frames. Ratliff had another run-scoring hit as part of a two-run fifth that gave the visitors a 4-2 lead.
It was 4-3 in the sixth when things fell apart for the Cavs. WBU took advantage of three SGU errors in the inning and scored two unearned runs – the go-ahead score coming on an RBI bunt hit. The Cavs got the tying runner to second in the seventh, but Murphy grounded out to end the game.
Ratliff (2-6) suffered the loss on the mound after giving up three earned runs on seven hits in 5-1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two. Ratliff has dropped his last six decisions.
The Pioneers started Game 2 with a bang, hitting a single, triple and double in their first three at-bats to lead 2-0. Cavalier starter Chris Sutton would stem the tide, though, retiring nine of the next 10 batters he faced. Sutton would only allow three hits the rest of the way.
SGU loaded the bases with one out in the second but only came away with one run – a Brian Bartlett single to right. WBU starter Tyler Doolittle, like Sutton, settled down after the early threat and faced only one over the minimum until the seventh.
That's when the Cavs chased Doolittle and got runners on first and second with one out. But Jordan Funtila hit into only his third double play of the season to end the rally and the game.
Sutton (0-5) fell short of that elusive first win of the season despite giving up only those two first-inning runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.
SGU (14-24, 2-14 SAC) will travel to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Thursday. That doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Chickasha.
