SHAWNEE – St. Gregory's pitcher Chris Sutton notched his first win of the season and the Cavaliers earned their first conference series victory of 2013 in a doubleheader split with Mid-America Christian Sunday at Bill Nicklas Field.
SGU racked up 14 hits in a 14-2 win in the opener before dropping a 5-4 decision in the nightcap. The Cavs swept a doubleheader from the Evangels Saturday in Oklahoma City.
Sutton, a freshman from Moore, tossed a complete-game two-hitter in Game 1. He struck out six, and the only two runs he allowed were unearned. Sutton had been winless in his previous six decisions.
He got plenty of support from the Cavalier bats. SGU raced out to a 7-0 lead on MACU starter Levi Nelson, scoring one run in the first inning, three in the second and three in the third. The Cavs got RBI hits from Jordan Funtila, Matt Blackwell, Roberto Celestino and Brian Bartlett during that span.
The home team blew it open in the fifth, sending 12 men to the plate during a seven-run, five-hit inning. Christian Torres and Davis Murphy each hit run-scoring doubles in the frame. Five Cavaliers – Funtila, Blackwell, Mark Milioto, Torres and Celestino – finished with multi-hit games.
Celestino, a senior from Gilroy, Calif., kept it going into Game 2. His two-RBI triple in the second inning gave SGU an early lead. Two batters later, Luke Taylor added a run-scoring infield hit, and the Cavs were up 3-0.
It was 4-1 SGU in the fifth when the visitors took advantage of some sloppy play to tie the game. After getting an RBI double from eight-hole JP Seifried, MACU plated a run on an SGU error and a wild pitch.
One inning later, nine-hole Bryan McKissick hit a two-out, RBI single to put the Evangels up for the first time in the series. MACU knuckleballer Christian Hill took it from there, blanking the Cavs over the final three innings. He retired the last six SGU hitters in order.
Julian Estrada (1-2) took the loss in relief. He gave up the go-ahead run in the fifth – his only inning of work. SGU junior Jacob Ratliff led his team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. He has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games.
The Cavaliers (18-29, 6-18 SAC) host MacArthur Street rival Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday at Bill Nicklas Field. That doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. SGU will honor its five seniors as part of Senior Day Thursday.
