WICHITA, Kan. – For the second consecutive week, St. Gregory's has swept the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.
James Smith earned the league's offensive award, while Tanner Reese garnered the defensive honor – his second straight. SGU's Matthew Hyde joined Reese as last week's honorees. It was the third time this season Smith has received the award.
Smith recorded his 14th and 15th hat tricks of the season, helping St. Gregory's to an unblemished 2-0 week. The sophomore from Edmond, Okla., notched four goals as the Cavaliers wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the KCAC Tournament with a 13-4 victory over Benedictine (Kan.). He followed that with three scores and two assists against Stephen F. Austin. Smith now has 69 goals on the season.
Reese posted an .800 save percentage, giving up only five goals on 25 on-target attempts. The Prosper, Texas, native turned away 16 shots against Benedictine (Kan.), and added nine ground balls between the two games. Reese has recorded double-digit saves in 11 games this season.
St. Gregory's (14-4) will take a five-game winning streak into the KCAC Tournament, set for April 22-23 in Leavenworth, Kan.
