SHAWNEE - The John Brown University volleyball team used some late runs in a four-set victory (25-18, 14-25, 25-19, 25-20) over St. Gregory's University on Tuesday night at W.P. Wood Field House. The Cavaliers lost their second match in a row and fell into a three-way tie for fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.
The Golden Eagles (20-14, 2-8) used a 9-2 run to break a 16-all tie and take the first set. SGU (12-12, 2-8) responded quickly, cruising to an 18-7 lead in an eventual second-set victory. JBU held an 18-16 advantage in the third set before reeling off six consecutive points as part of a 7-3 run in the third. The fourth set was much of the same for the visitors, who extended an 18-16 lead to 24-18 and put the home team away.
"(JBU) made changes and we didn't make adjustments," said first-year SGU coach Katrina English. "We need better focus and intensity."
Leading the attack for the Cavs was Kimmy Seiler, who had a team-high 12 kills. Freshman Joey Redwine had 20 assists and Yasmine Lopez recorded 40 digs.
SGU returns to action Friday at 8 p.m. at home against Wayland Baptist University. They close out the regular season Saturday in an 11 a.m. contest against Lubbock Christian University.
"We've got to find a way to close out the season with two wins," English said. "I think a game like tonight will fire us up for this weekend."
