SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Despite a game-high 19 points from Fayzon Richey and a career-best 18 from Brock Vorwald, St. Gregory's dropped a 76-62 decision to No. 6-ranked John Brown Saturday at Bill George Arena. The Golden Eagles had to put together a late run to ice the game even though the Cavaliers, who came into the game ranked last in the conference in shooting, had another bad night from the field.
JBU (20-4, 9-1 SAC) held the visitors to only 32 percent from the floor for the game. Richey was 7 of 18 from the field, and Vorwald finished 6 of 12. But the rest of the team combined for only 7 of 32. The Golden Eagles shot at a 49 percent clip, including 13 of 28 from three-point range.
Despite its struggles, SGU stayed in the game. The Cavs found themselves down only four at halftime after finishing the first 20 minutes at 19 percent from the field.
SGU took its first lead of the game at 28-27 with 18:23 left on a three-point basket from Vorwald, who connected on a career-best six from long range. There were three ties and three lead changes over the next nine and a half minutes before the home team put together its decisive run.
It was tied at 50 with 8:52 remaining when JBU exploded for an 18-3 spurt over the next 5:30 to take its largest lead of the game – 15 points – at 68-53. The Golden Eagles were 7-for-8, including four threes, during that stretch. The Cavs, meanwhile, managed only one make in nine attempts during the run and didn't get any closer than 11 the rest of the way.
SGU (6-13, 0-9 SAC) travels to Lubbock Christian Thursday. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
