SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist's Chase Adams scored a game-high 16 points, including nine in a decisive stretch early in the second half, and the No. 10-ranked Bison defeated St. Gregory's 75-55 Tuesday night at the Noble Complex. With the win, OBU sweeps the annual Holy War series with the Cavaliers.
Adams was 5 of 10 from the field – all five makes from long distance – as the Bison won for the sixth time in eight games. Senior Fayzon Richey scored a team-high 12 for SGU, which lost its 14th consecutive game. Paco Jones was the only other Cavalier in double figures, finishing with 10 points on a 3-for-5 night from the floor.
OBU shot 48 percent from the field and was 24 of 30 from the charity stripe. SGU shot 44 percent overall. Both teams pulled down 29 rebounds.
OBU raced out to a 15-2 lead just 5:27 into the game after holding the Cavs to one bucket in their first eight possessions. SGU reduced its deficit to eight on a Jay Valerius put-back with 13:36 to go, but the Bison again went a scoring run – this time 18-6 – to take their largest lead of the half at 33-13 with just more than five minutes left.
The Cavs finally got their defense in line late in the period. They cut that 20-point deficit to 33-21 at the break after holding the home team scoreless over the final 5:06.
Eight SGU players found the scoring column in the first half, led by Richey's five points. OBU's Clinton Houston had a game-high nine at the break.
The Cavs scored on their first possession of the second half and had a chance to cut the lead to single digits moments later, but Adams hit threes on three consecutive possessions to put the home team back up 42-23 with 17:32 left in the game.
That stretch proved to be critical for SGU, which was never able to recover. The Cavs cut the lead to 14 at the 14:12 mark but got no closer.
SGU (6-16, 0-12 SAC) returns to action Thursday when it hosts USAO. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
