SHAWNEE – Several St. Gregory's players had career nights, but the Cavaliers lost a five-set thriller to Bacone (27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 29-31, 15-12) Tuesday at W.P. Wood Field House. The loss was the Cavs' first to the Lady Warriors since the 2007 season.
SGU's Tiphani Funk equaled a career high in kills (20), while Daniella Rivera matched a career best in digs with 32. Cierra Mullins' 25 digs was a career high, and Maggie Lasater poured in 38 assists and 15 digs – both season highs.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, and neither team led by more than four in splitting the first two sets.
Down 2-1, the Cavaliers fought back from nine down to take a wild fourth set. The home team faced four match points, but trailing 29-28, they scored the frame's final three points – capped by two Funk kills from Lasater.
The decisive fifth set played out much like the rest of the match – with neither team holding more than a three-point edge. The Cavs led 12-10 after a Lady Warrior attack error, but the visitors regrouped to score the match's final five points.
St. Gregory's (0-6) hit .119 as a team, led by Kayrin Wells' .308 night on 12 kills.
The Cavaliers return to action Friday and Saturday at the Aggies Challenge Tournament in Goodwell.
